Love me, love my fool

“I must learn to love the fool in me – the one who feels too much, talks to much, takes too many chances, wins sometimes and loses often, lacks self-control, loves and hates, hurts and gets hurt, promises and breaks promises, laught and cries. It alone protects me against that utterly self-controlled masterful tyrant whom I also harbor and who would rob me of human aliveness, humility, and dignity but for my fool.”

Deathtroopers.

"This Halloween, Star Wars publishing goes someplace very new and very scary, with the release of the first Star Wars horror novel, Deathtroopers, by Joe Schreiber.

Deathtroopers is currently slated for an October 27, 2009 paperback release from Del Rey Books."

I gotta admit, the idea of a horror novel set in this universe tickles the very inner core of my geeky love for all things Star Wars.

Nanook of the north...and the books that he took.

So, I've really been trying to put a lot of thought into my book situation for when I go up north. I'm not gonna lie, I'm pretty terrified of the situation.

Thing is, I don't know how much free time - or how little free time I am going to have. What happens if I end up having loads of time free and I burn through the books I brought with me? What if I end up facing the better part of four months with no book by my side? What if, what if, what if!!!

Am I really dedicating a whole back pack just for books?

Am I crazy?

...

Don't answer that.

I'm excited though! Heres what I have.

All three of Joe Abercrombie's First Law books. They are, The Blade Itself, Before They Are Hanged and, Last Argument Of Kings. If you haven't heard of these books...then for shame. Apparently they are a nice gritty, fast, in your face, stomping tear up, thrown at you like a fist in the gut. All 3 books are in TPB style and average on 500 pages each.

Snow Crash, by Neal Stephenson. Its a stand alone cyber punk story that had heaps of praise thrown at it when it was first released. I've always meant to get to it, and plan on using it as a spring board to read Stephenson's work for the first time. This book is also TPB style and runs 470 pages.

Photobucket

The Fionavar Tapestry collection by, Guy Gavriel Kay. The omnibus includes all three novels, The Summer Tree, The Wandering Fire and, The Darkest Road. Another set of books I have always meant to read but never got around to. You can see that I am putting my time to good use, its a great opportunity to play catch up. The omnibus collection runs 774 pages, and it too is in TPB style.

Photobucket

I also have a book called, Survive. Its a short story collection of cannibals and castaways. Its basically centered around humans in terrifying, extenuating circumstances. It runs 300 pages.

Photobucket

I also have the first two of the Malazan books by, Steven Erikson. I've tried to read this series before, and on all attempts I failed. I'm determined to get a grip on them because I know when I do I will love them. I'll probably buy one or two more of the series before I set off. Theres a good 6-7 of em (give or take) and they are in paperback so thats nice and cheap...and the books are freaking huge for paperback releases so thats good. All the books pretty much average on 700-900 pages a pop so thats pretty good.

Photobucket

Also I have yet to read (or get) Scott Lynch's 2nd book in the Gentlemen Bastard series, Red Seas Under Red Skies. The first book was phenomenal and I'm super eager to read this one. It's in Hardcover though, which makes it more expensive, and more bulky to take with me.

Photobucket

Another hardcover that I want is, Iron Angel by, Alan Campbell. Its the second book in the Deepgate Codex series, and if its anything like the first book, Scar Night, then hell yes, I'd love seconds please.

Photobucket

These two are up in the air though. I wanna buy em and take em with...I'm really excited to dig into em...its just cost and room.

To many books...to little time.

Am I being silly? Do I have enough? Do I even need those last two hardcovers I mentioned? Can I have books mailed to me out there? What books of these I emtioned have you read? Get me excited for them...tantalize me...

The Graveyard Book.

"Hear this tragic tale: a sleeping family, a talented murderer, and an adventurous toddler — orphaned, but not assassinated. Small and alone, by accident and luck he escapes the scene of the crime and climbs a grassy hill to safety. At the top of the hill the boy finds a fence, and on the other side, a dark, quiet place.

And what is to become of him"

Its Neil Gaiman. Need I say more?

Wizards First Rule and Disney-ABC.

Production began this month on Sam Raimi's 22 episode run of Terry Goodkind's novel, Wizards First Rule, the first book in a series entitled, The Sword Of Truth.

Some love these books...some hate them.

Me?

I'm a big Sword Of Truth fan. The first shwack of books were GREAT! I will admit that later in the series Goodkind becomes bogged down with his own personal agendas, and the story becomes a little to preachy for my tastes, but overall, I'd have to say that, yes, I am a fan.

Anyways...casting.

Richard Cypher, the main character of our story will be played by, Craig Horner. Opposite Richard is of course our heroine, Kahlan, who will be played by actress, Bridget Regan.

Any of you Sword Of Truth fans? What do ya think of the casting for Richard and Kahlan? It will be interesting to watch the details on all of this as they come out.

The Name Of The Wind.

Is thumping good fun!! There was a reason that author Patrick Rothfuss's name was all over the book blogs when The Name Of The Wind was released last year. When you finish reading it you will see exactly why I and thousands of others have nothing but good things to say.

Its what good fantasy reading is all about, and holy hell I cant wait for the next one.

Marley & Me.

A novel by journalist turned author, John Grogan.

What a lovely little treat it was too. Its a fast read, but the whole way through you are spell bound by the life that both John and his wife share with their dog, Marley.

I guess the way it was written really drew me in. The lives of two people newly married, and very much in love with one another sharing their journey together with us. It made me sad, it made me happy, and it made me laugh out loud (something I rarely do when I read).

Not a book I would normally pick up and read, but Torte Girl loved it, and I wanted to see what it was that drew her in so much.

I'm glad I did.

On a side note, this book is actually being made into a movie, in fact it is in production this very moment. It stars Jennifer Aniston, and Owen Wilson as the two leads and is due out this coming Christmas. If the film is anything at all like the book then it is going to be a nice traditional heartwarming tale that will be a pleasure to watch.

Thats all. Thats it. If your up for a nice light memoir full of humor and laughable tales then check out Marley & Me. I think you will find yourself pleasantly surprised.

Of Wolf Parade and Jonathan Caroll.

I'm a big fan of Wolf Parade, have seen them live, and to this day I still play the shit out of their 2005 album, Apologies To Queen Mary.

Anyways, the band has a new album out this coming June entitled, Kissing The Beehive.

I only mention this because the album title is a direct nod to author Jonathan Carroll's novel of the same name.

Yes. THE Jonathan Carroll...easily one of my top five all time favorite authors. So, now knowing that Wolf Parade have directly named their newest album after Carroll's book...well...I'm intrigued.

Cool cool cool. Cant wait.

and just for fun, here's a youtube of Shine A light by Wolf Parade.

Pendulum Wars: The Battle of Aspho Fields

Photobucket

From, Kotaku:

"If you were wondering what exactly happened to Marcus Fenix before the events that transpired in the blockbuster Xbox 360 hit Gears of War, you might be getting a little more insight come August, as Del Rey readies Steven L. Kent's Gears of War - The Pendulum Wars: The Battle of Aspho Fields. The first in a planned trilogy of prequel novels for the game, the book will presumably cover the Pendulum Wars - a series of skirmishes between human countries that led to COG taking over the planet. The trilogy is being penned by Steven L. Kent, author of The Ultimate History of Video Games as well as his own series of Clone novels, which centers around a future where the Earth's colonies throughout the galaxy are policed by a clone military. Let's just say the series is in very capable hands, as long as Kent can get the right balance of steroids-to-profanity going."
